Intellectual Property (IP) workshop: "Leveraging IP in a Globalised World"

Due to globalisation, effective Intellectual Property management is becoming increasingly important for businesses around the world. The “patent thicket” strategy adopted by multinational companies is often costly and difficult to enforce, hence not necessarily viable for start-ups. Yet, young companies must leverage their IP portfolio as a competitive advantage, especially in this post-recessionary world. What creative and pragmatic approaches can they take?

  • Brand protection through trademark and design rights
  • New forms of IP such as patent pooling,Creative Commons, Open Innovation
  • Harmonised patent protection
  • Managing patents as an asset class

When: 28th January 2010
    6.30pm   Registration
    7:00pm   Workshop

Where: Judge Business School

For more about this event click here.

The workshop was a resounding success, attracting a sizable crowd of entrepreneurs and students, who engaged the panel in topics ranging from new models of IP transfer between academia and biotech to the impact of globalised IP enforcement on developing countries.

Tips from Warren Buffett to students

CUTEC President, Theodoros Koutroukides, and Cambridge University Entrepreneurs (CUE) Chairperson, Cong Cong Bo, represented the Cambridge University in a trip to meet Warren Buffett on 13th March 2009. Students from other schools including LBS, Oxford, Harvard, Stanford, and Wharton participated also in the 2-hour Q&A session and a lunch with the "Sage of Omaha."

Mr. Buffett encouraged potential future leaders of the world to NOT put over their entrepreneurial aspirations in view of the current "unfavorable" financial climate. He explained how he has lived his life without holding off anything, joking that a young entrepreneur postponing a start-up would be like "saving sex for old age."

Although not a high-tech investor himself, Mr. Buffett found the CUTEC concept interesting when invited to the Technology Ventures Conference. He stated that the primary quality of leaders is their communication ability (both oral and written), supporting systems that promote entrepreneurially-oriented students through a culture that allows them to practice their communication skills. Following-up with a comment in connection with the University Venture Fund, he said that "If these were around when I was in school, I'd probably still be in school."

"The investors' forum: Let us show you the money" - 11th February 2009

CUTEC and Cambridge University Entrepreneurs (CUE) successfully combined efforts to host the Investors' Forum on the 11th of February.

Alex van Someren, moderating the panel, opened the forum by asking, “How has investing changed in the new economic environment?” A diverse panel of early-stage investors addressed this and a range of other questions pertaining to venture capital. The panel unanimously had a positive tone for start-up companies in today’s market, but as Kerry Baldwin (IQ Capital) poetically put it - investors are looking for companies that are leaner and meaner with their money.

Venue: Law Faculty, LG18

Date: 11th February 2009 - COMPLETED

Panelists:
  * Alex Van Someren (nCipher) - moderator
  * Kerry Baldwin (IQ Capital)
  * Simon Cook (DFJ Espirit)
  * Laurence John (Amadeus)
  * Reshma Sohoni (SeedCamp)
  * Sitar Teli (Doughty Hanson Tech Ventures)

The panel spoke to a full room of over 250 attendees who travelled from as far away as Copenhagen, with 23 MBA students from the Copenhagen Business School participating in this event, which sold out more than a week in advance. Following the forum, attendees and panelists enjoyed a food and drink networking session.
